It seems that the UN has once again keyed into the fact that the state of Russian domestic policy is lacking. Among other primitive things in that the Kremlin pushes out, they routinely submit journalists to "politically motivated trials and convictions, discouraging critical media reporting." I have worked in and around Russia for years and can say that this will prove a major barrier to entry for them in the world of credibility. The report was not completely specific as referring to journalists, however, it "alluded to the killings of a number of journalists and human rights activists in Russia that remain unresolved, including the 2006 shooting of Anna Politkovskaya. The internationally known journalist was a harsh critic of the Kremlin and exposed widespread human-rights abuses and corruption in Chechnya." These flash points in the caucuses are perhaps where the name of the Kremlin most needs to be exonerated, and suppression of information from this region is only going to reek of cover up. Even if whatever activities are ongoing there are legitimate. Russia must realize that the world of information is getting smaller. There is an international presence all around them, and full disclosure and honesty are always the best policy.
